Car parking

The University of Southampton has a limited amount of car parking spaces available for staff, students, and visitors at academic sites and halls of residences.

From 15 April 2024 Broadlands Car Park will be closed to facilitate the construction of our brand new Teaching and Learning building in the North East Quarter (NEQ) of the Highfield Campus.

In developing plans for the NEQ, we have had to carefully consider the capacity and demand for car parking spaces within the Broadlands Car Park. After conducting an examination of usage across our estate, including Hampton Car Park, Boldrewood Car Park (including the Multi-Storey) and the recently opened South Broadlands Car Park, it has been determined that there is sufficient capacity to meet the present demand.

Below you can see a map of available parking locations and the walking time to the centre of Highfield Campus.

Parking Permits

The issue of a parking permit is restricted to staff members that live 3 miles or more from their work location and to students that have medical grounds for needing to drive.

Parking restrictions are in force across all University sites with enforcement between 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday and a parking permit is required to be on display in line with University Parking Regulations.

Visitors can be either booked into the Gower Car Park at Highfield Campus or should use the Pay & Display Car Park.

Permits are not required for motorcycles or scooters but they must not be parked in designated car parking spaces.

The University is also widely connected to a number of public transport routes and can be easily accessed by other forms of active travel

Full details of the terms and conditions for parking on University premises are listed on here.

General Information

The University reviews its car parking policy, regulations, fees and enforcement on an annual basis. Car park entry signage, enforcement warning signage and bay markings is reviewed on a regular basis. Additional Blue Badge bays are provided as needed as a matter of urgency.

Signs are on entrance to all access points to University academic campuses and car parks, to advise drivers that they are entering a private car park, that a University parking permit is required to be on display and that enforcement is in operation.

Parking Charge Notices (PCN)

University Parking Regulations state that a valid University parking permit must be displayed when parking between the hours of 8am and 5pm on academic sites, and at all times at Halls of Residences.

Our sites are manually patrolled to ensure that University parking regulations are complied with. A vehicle found parked in non-compliance of University parking regulations will be issued with a Parking Charge Notices (PCN) for £50, or £75 for a serious offence.  The PCN must be paid within 20 working days from the date of the PCN being issued. A discount of £25 is given on PCN’s paid within 10 working days of the PCN being issued.

Appeals will be considered only where there are extenuating circumstances or facts are materially incorrect. Appeals must be in writing or by email to parking@soton.ac.uk with a copy of the PCN included. A reply will be sent to the appellant. It is regretted that no discussions will be entered into over the telephone.  Payment of PCNs should be made via the Online Store.

Electric vehicle charging across our campuses

The University has EV charging facilities across Highfield, Avenue, Winchester and Boldrewood campuses, supplied by Pod Point.

Pod Point has an easy to use app available to iPhone and Android users. Staff can simply download the app, log in using their University email address, and follow the instructions in the user guide to charge their vehicle. If you have external visitors who require temporary access to a charger, please let the parking team know via parking@soton.ac.uk and they will be happy to register their email address to enable them to use the system.

The charging point locations are shown on the interactive campus map. When using an EV charge bay within a permit holder car park, a parking permit is not required during the charging process.

Once charging has finished we ask that the vehicle is removed promptly to give others the opportunity to charge.
