About this course

Develop your problem-solving skills and knowledge of statistical methods on this MSc in Statistics with Applications in Medicine at the University of Southampton. Learn how to collect and analyse medical data, and gain transferable skills such as research methodology and programming statistical software. Prepare for a career in medical statistics or further study at PhD level.

Medical statisticians play a vital role in healthcare, and their work informs many lifesaving medical breakthroughs. Their work includes:

  • design and analysis of clinical trials for new treatments
  • identifying the genes responsible for disease
  • developing methodology to enable advances in personalised medicine

As a qualified medical statistician, you’ll be able to help the pharmaceutical industry tackle the challenges presented by increasingly complex patient data.

On this UK master’s course you’ll learn how to deal with these challenges through the study of clinical trials, statistical genetics and epidemiological methods.

You’ll gain advanced knowledge of statistical theory and methods. We’ll teach you how to apply those methods to solve practical problems around the collecting and analysis of medical data.

Much of the course is taught by medical statisticians, who provide data and case studies from their work at Southampton General Hospital and the Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit.
